Notes from Zolo · Part 1 of 2 · Your side of the bill

The real cost of a delivery-app order

Nobody at the cafeteria raised the price of your dinner. The app did, in layers, most of which never appear on your receipt. Here is one family order, followed dirham by dirham, and what changes when nobody takes a slice.

The markup you never see

Commission-based delivery apps charge the shop a percentage of every order, plus payment processing, marketing and promotion costs. A cafeteria on thin margins cannot absorb that, so it does the only thing it can: it raises its app menu. The AED 30 burger quietly becomes AED 40 online. The counter price and the app price part ways, and most of us never notice, because we never see them side by side.

So let’s put them side by side.

Illustrative figures, not any one platform’s prices or terms. Every shop sets its own prices; Zolo never marks one up.

The AED 12 illusion

Look at that receipt the way most of us do and you’ll think: “I paid AED 12 in delivery and service charges. Fair enough.” But the honest comparison isn’t AED 78 against AED 66. It’s AED 78 against the AED 50 the counter would have charged. The AED 28 gap is built from layers that never introduce themselves:

The discount illusion

This is the cleverest layer. The app crosses out the inflated price and hands you a voucher:

AED 78 AED 6517% OFF 🎉

It feels like saving AED 13. But the counter price of this basket was AED 50, so the “discounted” order still costs AED 15 more than walking in. A discount measured against an inflated price isn’t a discount; it’s a partial refund of the markup.

What changes when nobody takes a slice

Zolo charges shops a flat AED 149 a month, and nothing at all until their first 100 delivered orders or six months, whichever comes first. Not a percentage, so there is nothing to pass on to you. The menu on Zolo is the menu on the counter: this basket costs AED 50, plus whatever small delivery fee the shop itself sets, often nothing above a minimum order. The shop’s own rider brings it, you pay cash or card at the door, and the shop keeps the whole amount the same day.

“You pay twice for the same meal: once through the menu, once through the fees.”

And that’s only your side of the bill

The shop’s side is worse. Of everything you paid, the platform keeps its share first and settles the rest later, and after the kitchen’s own costs, a surprisingly small amount survives. We worked through a full month of it: Where AED 100,000 of app sales actually goes →

Try it on your own street

Zolo is piloting in Al Danah and Al Zahiyah in Abu Dhabi, growing street by street. If you live there, or run a shop there, ask for an invite and see the counter price arrive at your door.
